Treatments offered at Modwena Orthodontics

What will happen at my first appointment?

At your initial consultation we will take you through a step by step approach to plan the best treatment available for your individual need. We will take time to discuss your options and costs with you.

Types of treatment

Orthodontics normally involves one or a combination of fixed, functional and removable appliances.

FIXED BRACES

Fixed braces are made up of bands and brackets that are stuck onto each tooth. Straightening wires run between the various attachments and the teeth are moved. The fixed attachments must not be removed by the patient. The length of treatment varies between 9 months and two years although complex cases may take longer. It is extremely rare for treatment to last more than three years. The most commonly used fixed braces are made from stainless steel but we also offer aesthetic braces

FUNCTIONAL BRACES

Functional appliances are usually fitted to reduce the prominence of upper incisors and to improve the way the teeth bite together.
Removable functional appliances are the most popular. Two removable appliances, one over the top teeth and one over the bottom teeth, alter the bite of the teeth by holding the lower jaw forwards.

Functional appliances should be worn on a full-time basis, day and night, for about 9 -12 months. They must be removed for cleaning, swimming and contact sports. After this initial treatment period they are usually followed by fixed braces.

REMOVABLE BRACES

These are less commonly used these days but are occasionally used before fixed braces to move anindividual tooth over the bite. They have small wires on a plastic plate which is worn full time, only taken out to clean and clean the teeth.

RETAINERS

After treatment your teeth need to be retained to keep them in the desired position , retainers are normally removable braces that are worn at night for a long period of time. Sometimes a fixed retainer is stuck to the teeth for a more permanent form of retention
